CONSIDER YOUR TIME LINE –

In this article, we are going to give some thought to your time line, how you store time and your communication patterns.

You may not have thought about this before but you have a certain way of arranging your past and your future so that you can tell the difference between them both. Think about it, otherwise how would you know what was a past event and what is a future memory? You intrinsically do know the difference and how you know is based on how you encode your memories of the past and future and how you store that information in your brain. Almost everyone on the planet stores time in a linear way and how they store the information makes the difference.

HOW YOU STORE TIME AND YOUR COMMUNICATION PATTERNS –

Lots of the language patterns that we utilise Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or that are used unconsciously by masters of communicators are as a (conscious or unconscious) result of understanding how people organise time in their mind.

Expert communicators, people who know how other individuals store time also find it very easy to create change unobstrusively during conversation by utilising temporal language shifts. It’s almost like being able to navigate in someone’s mind, so you can quickly and effectively take them from inside the problem to outside the problem which is where the solution exists. This is an extremely useful skill in business, in management, in coaching and therapy. It produces fantastic results.

You may have noticed that as people talk, they will often give you clues as how they think and  a description of what they
are doing in their mind. The question is are these description of literally what they are doing mentally or is it metaphorical? Have you ever said or heard someone say, “Yes, time is on my side…” or something like, “You know when you look back on that situation you are going to laugh about it” or “Oh, I’ve put that all behind me…” So what does that mean? In NLP and in Time Line Therapy ® we know that when people speak, they are choosing words to describe the Internal Representations or pictures that they have in their mind. They are labelling with words their internal experience of time literally as it’s an integral part of the experience.
When people are using language temporally ie talking in relation to time, this is in fact a description of how they store time.

Time Line Therapy® and Your Unconscious Mind

In the context of Time Line Therapy ®, the “unconscious mind” is representative of everything that you are not consciously aware of right now. In fact your unconscious mind is a very important facet of who you are because it’s your unconscious mind that’s in charge of running your body. It keeps you heart beating, your food to be digested, hormones to be released and regulated, you eyes to blink, for you to continue to breath. It performs SO many tasks because it would be impossible for you to do them all consciously.

In this first article about your unconscious mind we are going to take a look at how it is the source of all learning, all behaviour and all change.

LEARNING: It’s not your conscious mind that is the part of you that learns, it is your unconscious mind. It’s not immediately obvious and you may have thought that you learned consciously in the past. It’s true that your learning has to go through your conscious mind……it’s your unconscious mind that remembers everything. Everything have you have learned is in your unconscious mind.

Think about all the things you have ever learned. Can you remember the things that you learned in school? For example, how many degrees are in a right angle?  That’s right, the answer is 90 degrees. Now until that was mentioned you probably were not consciously remembering “90 degrees, 90 degrees….there are 90 degrees in a right angle”. You probably were not doing that! When you were asked the question the answer came from your unconscious mind. Consider if you had to remember all the phone numbers you know consciously, there wouldn’t be enough room for anything else, would there? So all learning takes place at the unconscious level. For example, you know your home phone number, don’t you? Say it to yourself now……… Now before you were thinking of your home phone number, where was it? It’s stored somewhere that you are not conscious of, it’s stored in your unconscious mind. The part of your mind that you are not conscious of, right now. Everything that you have ever learned resides in your unconscious mind.

BEHAVIOUR: Our behaviour is unconscious. For example moving your arm is an unconscious process. Did you know that there are 159 muscles between the tip of your fingers and your shoulder blade? You couldn’t control all them consciously. You may have a conscious thought to pick up a glass of water from the desk but the process of controlling the movement of the muscles in your arm to achieve that desired outcome is done unconsciously. You just do it.

How about this, the last time you drove to work, how conscious of it were you? Do you remember the whole journey or just parts of it or none of it at all?

All of our behaviour gets relegated to the unconscious. The way we respond to people, the way we create things or don’t create things and the way we interfere in the process called life….and that process is all behaviour and all behaviour is unconscious.

CHANGE: Think about a bad habit you wanted to change in the past. Was it easy? Probably not. For most people they find it hard to change a bad habit. For them it’s something that takes time to achieve. I remember a time in the past when I thought I’m going to give up eating biscuits and one day I said right, I’m not going to eat biscuits anymore. Within about 10 minutes I was eating them again!

In the real world, change isn’t always that easy. Lots of people go on doing the same old things over and over again, year after year, repeating the same cycle and they complain about it. If change isn’t that easy for us, it simply means that we are out of rapport with our unconscious mind. In the real world people are frequently out of rapport with the unconscious mind, and that is the reason that change isn’t that easy for them.

Your unconscious mind wants rapport and it looks up to your conscious mind like a 5 or 6 or 7 year old niece or nephew might look up to you. Your unconscious mind would really like to be in rapport with your conscious mind.  It wants your direction and support, and it would like to do what you asked if it only knew how. If you are not feeling like there is rapport between your unconscious and conscious mind, it might be that you are giving confusing and conflicting messages to your conscious mind.

Let’s take a look at this concept a bit further. Did you know that your unconscious mind cannot process a negatives? In fact, this is also true for the conscious mind too. Don’t think about a blue tree. What are you thinking about? Unless you were semantically trained, you are probably thinking about a blue tree, even though I said don’t think about a blue tree. You can’t think about what you don’t want to think about, without thinking about it. Think about that!!!

So most people go through life and maybe they get into a new relationship and they say something like, “Oh, I hope she doesn’t leave me” or “I hope I don’t get hurt again.” Or maybe they go to work and they say, “I hope the boss doesn’t yell at me.” or how about the sales consultant who starts the day by saying “I hope I don’t miss my target today.” ??

So what is likely to happen? Are they going to do that? If that becomes the reality of the situation, it’s probably becuase they are sending the wrong signal to their unconscious mind. If it is the wrong signal, it is because the unconscious mind cannot process a negative within it. Remember you can’t think about what you don’t want to think about, without thinking about it.

In the next part of Time Line Therapy® and Your Unconscious Mind we are going to take a look more at how to facilitate communication between the conscious and the unconscious minds.

Let’s talk about your Time Line which is how your Unconscious Mind encodes and stores all of your memories.  This is how you know the difference between a past memory, and a future memory.

The concept of your Time Line is for the most part, an unconsious process. It’s like when you remember your home phone number or your date of birth, you may be more or less aware of it from time to time.

In releasing the negative emotions from the person’s past memories, this has a dramatic impact on their behaviour. Think about it for a moment. What would it be like for you, if we released all of the anger (for example) on your past memories, whilst preserving the positive learnings from those events, so you could use those learnings in the future.  Or how about releasing the sadness, fear, hurt, gulit or any other negative emotion? Next, what if you could go back and re-do any old decision that you made in the past, and decide it in a new way — a way that supported who you want to be now? Then, what if we could have every event in the past be re-evaluated in such a new way as to support the way you wanted to be now? The wonderful thing about utilising Time Line Therapy ™, is that we also have the ability to re-evaluate our past, and change any decision which limits us. That’s useful. Because to a certain extent, how we behave now and our behaviour in the present is guided by the decisions that we have made in the past. That’s both decisions that have been made consciously and also decisions that have been made unconsciously. Our decisions are stored in our Time Line, and through our Time Line and using Time Line Therapy ™,  we can gain access to them.

Mind Body Connection is very important from a Time Line Therapy ™ Perspective

Way back in ancient times, the people didn’t specifically talk about the mind body connection because it was a given, it was simply a way of life. The thinking of these ancient cultures was similar with the thinking that exists in today’s modern, Western world, in that our Unconscious Mind is responsible for the running of and preserving the physical body. However they didn’t believe that physical issues or aliments are caused by something just going wrong only within the physiology.

This wisdom is very important from an Time Line Therapy ™ perspective. Drawing on this ancient knowledge that would say that physical body and or functions of the physical body may go awry due to the because of the mixed up messages that we give the Unconscious Mind. Here’s an example, we may say something like, “I’m going to be healthy, I can be healthy” and then we eat unhealthy foods. Or we may say that we want to be energised but we don’t take time to rest. So we give the Unconscious Mind contradictory messages and it may stop working properly because it will follow the message that is the easiest. It may even start to create malfunctions because of the confusion. From this viewpoint, here we have the basis of all physiological dis-ease (not including germs or viruses or ageing). Dis-ease cannot be explained or put right only on the physical.

In Time Line Therapy ™ we assume an integrated approach in our teaching, as the ancient cultures did, knowing that the mind, emotions and spirit are not separate from the body.

More recently and this is also important for Time Line Therapy ™ (and also NLP, Hypnosis and NLP Coaching) neuroscience has shown, input to your senses, including commands from your Conscious Mind, creates an electrical impulse. As soon as that electrical impulse reaches the end of a neural pathway, its releases a chemical. Research has shown that this chemical is then picked up by every cell in your body. As Deepak Chopra puts it “Every cell in your body is eavesdropping on your internal dialogue.” So what’s important from this discussion is that every thought you think, impacts every cell in your body. From a Time Line Therapy ™ perspective, we should then ask ourselves, “What am I creating in my head and what chemicals are those thoughts releasing, filtering into my physical body?”

Anxiety has its emotional basis in Fear. Where Fear is primarily related to events in the past, Anxiety is a future based emotion. Try and feel anxious about something that’s already happened?!

The physical symptoms that are often described by someone who is experiencing  Anxiety include increases in heart rate or the rate of breathing, feeling light headed, shaking, sweating, tingling in the hands or feet.  These symptoms are impossible to ignore and it can be even tougher to overcome them on your own.

Interesting there is a purpose to Anxiety – it’s like a warning light on the dash board of your car. Anxiety is a warning from your Unconscious Mind and it is communicating one of two things to you. Either that you are focused on what you don’t want to happen OR that you are under prepared.

Eliminating Anxiety is simple and easy like any other Time Line Therapy™ technique. There is a specific process can be utilised by kids as young as 3 years old and grown ups as old as 90! Time Line Therapy™ – Understanding the Basics

The thinking behind Time Line Therapy ™ is the same as the wisdom from ancient cultures. Negative emotions that remain trapped in the body will block the flow of energy, our life force.  Therefore the supply of energy is depleted. Think of your body as a quantum mechanical device.

Time Line Therapy ™ facilitates the release of negative emotions and limiting decisions thus allowing energy to flow. The result is that the person experiences physical, mental and emotional well being with the renewed flow of energy around the body.

Negative emotions where they are suppressed or are running the show are absorbing energy that truthfully could be put to better use. If we under-react because of negative emotion and don’t handle a situation that comes up or we don’t asset ourselves the consequence could be harmful or costly. The flip side of the coin is that is we over-react that too can create all sorts of problems, from an end of a relationship to an instance of road rage.

Instead of being controlled by our negative emotions, we prefer the empowering freedom that comes from what we describe as “being at cause”. That means “I am the cause for what I’ve created in my life”. This mindset provides us with a greater awareness by taking responsibility and recovering choices in a given situation instead of getting lost in a series of emotional reactions.
